A trail-blazing commitment to depict the integrated entanglement of man and nature towards preserving the environment, needs more than hard core logicality. The current showing of Sujan Biswas aptly illustrates this point of view through his latest take on how nature, if mangled and manipulated for personal gains, disfigures the human conscience and backfires into a mangled heap of disaster. Through his choice of a muted palette and graphic depiction of an apparently pseudo-fantasy world, the artist has looped together an enterprise with a telling message Yes, it is not a new twist to the oft heard nature-man conflict of interests. It is a reflection instead, of the callous whorl of wanton technical diktat that believes in reining nature into a noose of clogged competence, its free-flowing tendrils looped into a set programming. And yet, says the artist, nature has the last say, as through the apertures and the spaces in-between, there bloom attractive blossoms in orange and green, their freshness a defiant answer to man’s spruced mechanics. In other works on this show, the fantasy play finds another outlet, where man chooses to transgress nature’s legitimate growth path with man-made interventions. The textural patterning in the backdrop of these works, articulating the many rhythms of nature speak of compositional strength and tonal improvisations that are Biswas’ signature style branch out in nlangurous swirls that contour a feminine form, through the mesh of fine lines. The surreal intonations of dawn and dusk, the play of light and shadow, in the works create an uncanny grip on one’s sensibilities, through depths of contrast that silhouette the everyday in a shroud of deep mystery. The nightly mysticism evoked through the tree image and dovelike forms, tease our sensibilities into a realm of convincing make-belief.The fading imagery of a pristine moon within grasping distance from outstretched branches, thickens the mystery a few notches higher. This conglomeration of chimerical images into a convincing saga of environmental concern defines a telling afterthought for the viewer. No one can turn away without a soul-searching exercise to establish how much and how far we have walked the path to help preserve our world. Keep it safe and vitalized for generations to come is his final salute to nature, through his brush strokes.
